Clayton is a native of the Washington D.C. area and his interest in international education began after spending a year studying at Mexico's Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México as an undergraduate. After graduating from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont he worked in environmental education and taught math for several years in D.C. Public Schools. Clayton then earned a master’s degree in international education from the SIT Graduate Institute and spent four years managing UNDP funded international programs for Chile's Ministry of Education. He joined ISEP's team in 2010. His interests include travel, hiking, biking and reading novels.
