Staff Pick: Live Like a Local Finalist Carlos Rodriguez-Torres from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in the U.S. and studied at Toyo University in Japan

“Hikawa Shrine in Kawagoe is one of many shrines that is dedicated to love and marriage. Many Japanese visit in the name of finding fruitful love or to pray for a healthy marriage. Marriage is often referred to as a union of love between two people. An eternal love for one another, unlike the love for family or things, love takes different meanings depending on what you give it. In Japanese, love has meaning in not one but 3 ways: すき(suki) similar to like, だいすき(daisuki) similar to love, and あいしてる(aishiteru) an intense or eternal love. At the time I couldn't read much but the sheer volume of prayer placards hoping for love left enough of an impression on me.”
