Enrollment Requirements
Enrollment in the ISEP Student Insurance is a condition of placement for both ISEP Exchange and ISEP Direct, and will not be waived even if you are covered under another insurance policy.
If you fail to enroll, or do not enroll in adequate coverage, your acceptance cannot be finalized. ISEP policy permits us to enroll you in your required dates and to bill you for the premium plus a penalty fee.
Your insurance policy’s dates must cover the entire program period listed in your program acceptance package. This means your enrollment dates should begin on or before the “Official Arrival Date” and end at least one day after the “Last date of Benefits.”
Students Exempted from ISEP Health Insurance Enrollment
EU students studying at another EU location
If a student is an EU citizen, resides in the EU or outside the EU, and is studying abroad in an EU country, they may be exempt from enrolling in full ISEP insurance and only enroll in Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation). BUT, they must provide a copy of their EHIC to insurance@isep.org.
UK students studying at an EU location
If a student is an UK citizen, resides in the UK, and is studying abroad in an EU country, they may be exempt from enrolling in full ISEP insurance and only enroll in Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation). BUT, they must provide a copy of their GHIC to insurance@isep.org.
DAAD Scholars
DAAD Scholars are exempt from enrolling in the ISEP insurance program. The student is required to provide ISEP a verification letter from the DAAD.
Scholarship students from Ghana
Scholarship students from Ghana will be automatically enrolled in the ISEP Health insurance once they have accepted their placement. The cost for the health insurance premium is paid by ISEP. Please consult our team if you have any questions.
ISEP Health Insurance Exceptions
Below is information regarding specific locations’ health insurance requirements. If your destination is listed, carefully read the information provided below. If you do not see your host country below, please click here to proceed with enrollment.
Australia Austria Canada Czech Republic Estonia Finland France Germany New Zealand South Africa Switzerland United Kingdom
All ISEP students going to Australia are required to purchase the Australian health insurance, Overseas Student Health Cover, in order to obtain a student visa for Australia. You will receive OSHC enrollment information from your host institution. Your host institution will only issue your Confirmation of Enrollment after you have enrolled in the OSHC.
The OSHC covers between 85 to 100 percent of costs for doctor visits, laboratory services, and x-rays. Students may be expected to make a co-payment for any difference between the amount payable under the Medicare Benefits Schedule and the amount actually charged for the medical service; the plan covers 100 percent of hospital services.
Students are advised to review the information listed on the OSHC Worldcare site.
See your ISEP Acceptance Package for further information. As a result of Australian law requiring all international students to enroll in OSHC, ISEP’s full insurance policy is not required but is still recommended for the following reasons:
- OSHC does not include periods before and after your program start date;
- OSHC does not include periods of travel during your program. Unless you have coverage through another insurance provider for these items, ISEP advises you to purchase the full ISEP student health insurance plan.
If you choose NOT to enroll in ISEP’s full coverage policy, you must STILL complete the ISEP online enrollment process to purchase Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation)
Due to this location’s specific health insurance requirements, students studying here are eligible for waivers of the full ISEP health insurance policy. These students can instead opt for a policy with less coverage. Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation) ensures access to emergency medical assistance and coordination of benefits.
For ISEP participants going to Austria, full ISEP student health insurance coverage may be waived. However, students must still enroll in Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation) for the duration of their stay. Additionally, students will be required to enroll in Austrian National Health Insurance upon arrival. Students participating for one semester only will be provided a coverage letter by their host institution for visa purposes. The coverage letter will indicate that the student will be enrolled in Austrian National Insurance for the duration of their program. Although you are not required to purchase full ISEP health insurance, please carefully consider the following:
- You may not be able to enroll in host country health insurance until after you register at your host institution.
- National insurance coverage may not cover you when you travel outside of the host country
- National insurance policies do not include medical evacuation and repatriation of remains
ISEP therefore encourages students to purchase full ISEP health insurance coverage for any time they will be in their host country before or after their program dates and during any periods of travel that are not covered by the Austrian National Insurance program. See your ISEP Acceptance Package for further information.
ISEP participants studying in Ontario, Canada are required to enroll in the provincial university health plan. ISEP participants studying in British Columbia or Saskatchewan, Canada, are required to enroll in the ISEP health insurance plan. See your ISEP acceptance package for further information.
If you plan to study in Ontario, you are not required to purchase ISEP’s limited health insurance plan, but might consider doing so for the following reasons:
- You may not be able to enroll in the host country health insurance until you register at your host institution;
- Provincial insurance coverage may not cover you when you travel outside the host country. Unless you have coverage through another insurance provider for these items, ISEP advises you to purchase ISEP’s limited health insurance plan.
If you choose NOT to enroll in ISEP’s limited coverage policy, you must STILL complete the ISEP online enrollment process to purchase Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation).
All students going to the Czech Republic are required to purchase the ISEP Limited Medical Insurance and Global Assistance plan (includes medical evacuation and repatriation), as well as local health insurance with a Czech company in order to get their visa. All insurance companies must be authorized to provide insurance services in the Czech Republic. Students will receive a list of appropriate insurance companies from the Czech Embassies abroad.
The list is also accessible on the webpage of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Students must enroll in both the ISEP limited health insurance plan and Czech insurance upon acceptance. Students will not be able to obtain their visa without valid health insurance. The coverage provided by the Czech travel health insurance plans includes the following:
- Costs incurred as a result of injury or sudden illness
- Medical repatriation to the state whose travel document you hold or where you hold a residence permit
- Coverage up to the amount of at least 30,000 EUR
- Coverage for the entire Schengen territory and the entire period of your stay in the Schengen area.
All students attending programs in Estonia are required to show proof of insurance for visa purposes. ISEP offers a Limited Medical Insurance and Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation) plan for students studying in Estonia. This plan has a $0 deductible, $0 coinsurance, and a maximum benefit of US$200,000.
Finnish consulates require that the health insurance plan you enroll in has a Policy Maximum of at least €100,000 and a Deductible of €0. ISEP now offers a Limited Medical Insurance and Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation) plan for students studying in Finland. This plan has a $0 deductible, $0 coinsurance, and a maximum benefit of US$200,000.
Non-European students will need to register online for the National Health System (French Social Security) via a special website for partial coverage of health care expenses throughout their time studying in France. This registration process will be explained by students’ host institutions. Registration is mandatory (except for students who are sure they already have special insurance covering medical expenses, hospitalization…) and free of charge.
Students are also required to enroll in the mandatory ISEP Student Insurance in order to ensure comprehensive coverage while abroad.
Not including Summer term students
For ISEP students going to Germany on an Exchange program: Students going to Germany on an exchange basis will be required to purchase German National Health Insurance upon arrival on campus and may therefore waive full ISEP student health insurance coverage for the duration of their program. However, as national insurance policies do not include medical evacuation and repatriation of remains, students are also required to purchase ISEP Global Assistance coverage (includes medical evacuation and repatriation). It is also required that students participating in a pre-semester language course purchase full ISEP insurance for the duration of that course, and recommended that students purchase full coverage for any time they will be in their host country before or after their program dates, or during any travel that is not covered by the German National Insurance plan.
For students going on an ISEP Direct semester program: Students going to Germany on an ISEP Direct semester program will be enrolled in both ISEP Global Assistance coverage (includes medical evacuation and repatriation) and German National Insurance. Students will finish the National Insurance enrollment once they begin their semester. The cost of both policies is covered by the ISEP Direct Program Fee. For any periods of stay before or after program dates, students must purchase full ISEP health insurance.
Due to this location’s specific health insurance requirements, students studying here are eligible for waivers of the full ISEP health insurance policy. These students can instead opt for a policy with less coverage. The Global Assistance Policy (includes medical evacuation and repatriation), ensures access to emergency medical assistance and coordination of benefits.
In order to enroll at the host university, ISEP participants destined for New Zealand must purchase insurance that meets the New Zealand Ministry of Education’s minimum guidelines. Students need to consult their host university for insurance policy recommendations and enrollment procedures. Students will not be allowed to register for classes until they have submitted proof of sufficient insurance coverage to the host university.
Further information on this insurance requirement can be found on the Massey University website and the NMIT website.
You must STILL complete the ISEP online enrollment process to purchase Global Assistance Policy (includes medical evacuation and repatriation).
In addition to ISEP Health Insurance, all foreign students in South Africa are required to enroll in a South African registered medical aid scheme for a full calendar year. Students will purchase South African medical aid on arrival. The cost is around R2,000.
ISEP participants studying abroad at ISEP member institutions in Switzerland are required to enroll in health insurance policies at Swiss government-approved levels. Students must enroll in a Swiss-based health insurance company. For some policies, students may need a supplemental policy to cover regular or unique medical needs such as allergies, diabetes, and psychological visits. Costs vary based on the policies chosen. Students should anticipate paying a minimum of roughly US$80/month.
Students must enroll in one of two plans: Swisscare or ServiStudent. Students are responsible for researching, paying for, and enrolling in the insurance they take out for their exchange to Switzerland. They are also responsible for the validation process of their health insurance with the local Swiss authorities. Neither ISEP nor its Swiss member institutions are responsible for the services provided by any health insurance company selected by the student.
If students don’t have any health insurance coverage before their arrival in Switzerland, they must consider the risks of not having any medical coverage while traveling.
In order to ensure that all ISEP students have access to emergency medical assistance, coordination of benefits, medical evacuation, and repatriation, all students going to Switzerland must also enroll in the Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation) supplemental policy that provides these services.
For more information regarding national health plans, see the Country Handbooks.
Full Year Students Going to the United Kingdom
- Visitors from EU countries on temporary visits to England may use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if they fall ill or have a medical emergency while in England. Not all services may be free and may cover more or less than what you are accustomed to in your home country.
- The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance and does not cover any private medical healthcare or being flown back home, so ISEP students will still be required to enroll in ISEP’s Global Assistance policy (includes medical evacuation and repatriation).
- Students from non-EEAA countries and Swiss nationals must enroll in full ISEP insurance, as EHIC access has ceased as of January 2021.
- Students who apply for the Student Visa (formerly the Tier 4 visa) in the UK may waive the ISEP insurance requirement (except Global Assistance Services) as they will have to pay a health surcharge to use NHS services, but ISEP insurance is still recommended as it covers students for any travel outside of their home country.
ISEP’s full insurance policy is not required but is still recommended for the following reasons:
- NHS coverage does not include periods before and after your program start date;
- NHS coverage does not include periods of travel during your program. Unless you have coverage through another insurance provider for these items, ISEP advises you to purchase the full ISEP health insurance plan.
Students eligible for this waiver STILL complete the ISEP online enrollment process to purchase Global Assistance (includes medical evacuation and repatriation).

Treatment & Claims
Receiving Medical Treatment Abroad
When you arrive at your host institution, you should find out what student health services are available. Normally this would be the first place to go if you have a medical problem, and the treatment received there is often less expensive. The health service will refer you to a specialist or a hospital if you need additional treatment.
Within the United States
Your coverage with ISEP allows access to the PHCS hospital and physician network which utilizes negotiated charges which may save you money. You may find a participating provider by contacting PHCS at 1-800-922-4362 or by visiting their website at www.multiplan.com. This information is on the back of your medical ID card. If you need to see a provider in the United States, you will need to present your medical ID Card. You are not required to use a PHCS network provider.
If you receive services in the United States, your provider will most likely want to file a claim for you using his or her own form. In some cases, you may be asked to pay for the services you receive and then request reimbursement by filing a claim directly with ASRM, LLC.
Outside the United States
Typically, you will be required to pay for your medical expenses yourself and then submit a claim to request reimbursement. If you need assistance with payment arrangements, please contact On Call International as soon as possible. On Call International can often arrange direct payment between ASRM, LLC and the medical providers for large outpatient and inpatient claims.

Student Health Insurance: COVID-19 FAQ
Will I need a COVID vaccine to participate in my ISEP study abroad program?
Students are required to understand and comply with the terms of participation, codes of conduct, and emergency procedures of their program. If the student’s host country, host university, home university, home country, or travel provider require a COVID-19 vaccination, students should comply with that requirement. ISEP expects changes to vaccine requirements for 2021 and 2022 programs. Students should monitor program expectations and terms of participation. For your host institution’s requirements, this information can be found in the Medical Requirements of your program acceptance package. ISEP will notify students if we become aware of changes in the terms of participation for their program.

Does ISEP insurance cover flight cancellations?
ISEP insurance does not cover flight cancellations or changes. ISEP recommends contacting the airline with which you booked your flight to see about potential change fees being waived due to unforeseen circumstances. ISEP recommends that students consider purchasing independent supplemental travel insurance to help mitigate potential change fees.
I need a COVID test before I arrive in my host country. Is this covered?
ISEP insurance is not valid in your home country. ISEP insurance only begins both on the first date of coverage and when you are outside your home country. ISEP recommends that all students maintain health insurance coverage in their home countries before departure and after returning from program to cover any medical care needs, as ISEP insurance does not apply in a student’s home country.
Will I be able to extend insurance if travel restrictions require that I remain in my host country longer than expected?
If a student is required to remain in their host country longer than expected due to travel restrictions, ISEP will be able to provide instructions regarding extending insurance coverage. Generally, students may extend their coverage for up to two months after their program ends. ISEP recommends that students continue to monitor their email inbox closely and do not hesitate to reach out with any additional concerns. It is the student’s responsibility to request an extension of ISEP insurance coverage while abroad. Please keep in mind, ISEP insurance is not valid in your home country, so be sure to have an alternative plan in place prior to returning home.
Does ISEP insurance cover any potential vaccine costs?
COVID-19 vaccines that are recommended by the CDC are covered at 100 percent when you are outside your home country.
