Program Enrollment Requirements by Location

For ISEP participants going to Australia, enrollment in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan is waived as students are required to purchase the Australian “Overseas Student Health Cover” (OHSC) in order to obtain a student visa for Australia. However, students must still enroll in the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan to ensure sufficient coverage while abroad.

You will receive OSHC enrollment information from your host institution. Your host institution will only issue your Confirmation of Enrollment after you have enrolled in the OSHC. The OSHC covers between 85 to 100 percent of costs for doctor visits, laboratory services, and x-rays. Students may be expected to make a co-payment for any difference between the amount payable under the Medicare Benefits Schedule and the amount actually charged for the medical service; the plan covers 100 percent of hospital services. ISEP requires the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan for students studying in Austria. Depending on host university and program length, students may also be required to enroll in Austrian National Health Insurance upon arrival.

For ISEP participants going to the Czech Republic, enrollment in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan is waived as students are required to enroll in local health insurance with a Czech company in order to get their visa. However, students must still enroll in the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan to ensure sufficient coverage while abroad.

Students will not be able to obtain their visa without valid Czech health insurance. All insurance companies must be authorized to provide insurance services in the Czech Republic. Students will receive a list of appropriate insurance companies from the Czech Embassies abroad. The list is also accessible on the webpage of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Students attending ISEP programs in the Czech Republic will also be given directions on recommended Czech Insurance programs by their host coordinator once accepted into the program.

All students attending programs in Estonia are required to show proof of insurance for visa purposes. ISEP requires the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan for students studying in Estonia. This plan has a $0 deductible, $0 coinsurance, and a maximum benefit of US$250,000. It includes medical evacuation and repatriation.

Finnish consulates require that the health insurance plan you enroll in has a Policy Maximum of at least €120,000 and a Deductible of €0. ISEP requires the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan for students studying in Finland. This plan has a $0 deductible, $0 coinsurance, and a maximum benefit of US$250,000. It includes medical evacuation and repatriation.

Students will register online for the National Health System (French Social Security) via a special website for partial coverage of health care expenses throughout their time studying in France. This registration process will be explained by students’ host institutions. Registration is mandatory and  free of charge.

Students studying in France are also required to enroll in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan in order to ensure sufficient coverage while abroad.

Not including summer term students

For ISEP semester and full year participants going to Germany, enrollment in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan is waived as students will be required to enroll in German National Health Insurance after arrival. However, students must still enroll in the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan to ensure sufficient coverage while abroad. Information about enrollment in the German National Health Insurance will be provided by students’ host institution in Germany.

Due to New Zealand’s specific health insurance requirements, students may waive enrollment in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan. Students are instead required to enroll in a New Zealand health insurance policy and the CISI Global Assistance Plan (includes medical evacuation and repatriation), which ensures access to emergency medical assistance and coordination of benefits. Students may optionally enroll in the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan.

ISEP participants studying in New Zealand must purchase insurance that meets the New Zealand Ministry of Education’s minimum guidelines. Students will be informed by their host university about insurance policy recommendations and enrollment procedures. Students will not be allowed to register for classes until they have submitted proof of sufficient insurance coverage to their host university.

All foreign students in South Africa are required to enroll in a South African registered medical aid scheme for a full calendar year. Students will purchase South African medical aid on arrival. The cost is around R4,000.

Students studying in South Africa are also required to enroll in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan in order to ensure sufficient coverage while abroad.

Due to Switzerland’s specific health insurance requirements, students may waive enrollment in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan. Students are required to enroll in a Swiss health insurance and in the CISI Global Assistance Plan (includes medical evacuation and repatriation), which ensures access to emergency medical assistance and coordination of benefits and may optionally enroll in the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan.

ISEP participants studying abroad at ISEP member institutions in Switzerland are required to enroll in health insurance policies at Swiss government-approved levels. Students must enroll in a Swiss-based health insurance company. For some policies, students may need a supplemental policy to cover regular or unique medical needs such as allergies, diabetes, and psychological visits. Costs vary based on the policies chosen. Students should anticipate paying a minimum of roughly US$80/month.

Students must enroll in one of two plans: Swisscare or scorestudies for the full length of their program, including the dates they are traveling to/from their host university. Students are responsible for researching, paying for, and enrolling in the insurance they take out for their exchange to Switzerland. They are also responsible for the validation process of their health insurance with the local Swiss authorities. Neither ISEP nor its Swiss member institutions are responsible for the services provided by any health insurance company selected by the student.

For ISEP participants who apply for the UK Student Visa, including all students studying in UK for over 6 months, enrollment in the CISI Comprehensive Medical & Global Assistance Plan is waived as during their visa application process they will pay a health surcharge to use NHS services. However, students must still enroll in the CISI Limited Medical & Global Assistance Plan to ensure sufficient coverage while abroad.
